Claim Two More Victims
|
|
Two climbers have been killed after being hit
by an avalanche near Ullapool. The two men, from Alloa
and Glasgow had been climbing on Beinn Dearg, at Braemore,
just south of Ullapool.
The Dundonnell Mountain Rescue Team were alerted just
after midnight on Saturday when the men failed to return.
The Dundonnell Rescue Team was joined by Rescue Teams
from Kinloss, Leuchas and Leaming, the bad weather preventing
a helicopter search team joining the search.
Calum MacRae of the Dundonnell Team said the conditions
were horrendous with rescuers walking waist deep in
snow.
The climbers were found by one of the dogs with the
Dundonnell team in an area known as Penguins Gully,
a popular ice climb.
The bodies were recovered on Sunday with the help of
the Stornaway helicoper and brought here to Ullapool.

A Parliamentary Committee has promised to look again
at the issue of G.M. Crop Trials after accepting the
argument of campaigners against the trials here in the
Highlands.
The Petitions Committee Members have agreed with protesters
who said Scottish Rural Affairs Minister Ross Finnie
HAS the power to halt the trial at Munlochy.

Beware of "Magic" Money Scams
|
|
Bogus companies are netting thousands of pounds through
scam promotions and the Department of Trade and Industry
are urging people not to give these phoney prizes a
second glance and put their literature straight in the
bin.
Every day people up and down the country receive letters
typically telling them they are the "lucky winner"
of a prize draw; all they have to do is send off an
administration fee or make a small purchase to receive
their prize. However, they never see their administration
fee again let alone the promised prize.
The elderly are particularly at risk of falling for
the empty promises of these bogus companies.
"they promise unexpected rewards but simply deliver
a hole in the pocket.
"Action can be taken against these scams but the
best solution is not to be fooled in the first place.
"We all need to be more cynical when it comes
to these cheap scams."
Scam promotions and schemes take a wide variety of
forms, are often ingenious and seductive. But anyone
considering a scheme, which appears to offer unexpected
prizes, financial benefits or goods and services should
first ask themselves:
· Do I know exactly what I am being asked to
pay for?
· Can I afford to lose the money I am being asked
to pay?
· Are there any obvious warning signs?
TOP TEN WARNING SIGNS
The most common warning signs are:
· The approach, whether in writing, by phone or
email is unsolicited.
· There is a very short time in which to respond
to claim a prize.
· An invitation to send a "processing"
or "management" fee to claim a prize.
· An invitation to purchase goods to obtain a prize
or reward.
· An invitation to use premium phone lines.
· The source of the promotion is based overseas.
· An invitation to send money out of the country,
particularly the Netherlands or Canada.
· Prizes are expressed in foreign currency.
· An invitation to provide credit card or bank
account details.
· Rewards are wholly dependant on persuading others
to join a scheme.
"There's only one thing to do, put these bogus
money scams straight in the bin. Don't even give them
a second glance.
